Do you have big vacation plans for this summer? Whether you’re preparing for a long weekend away camping for the Fourth of July or you’re getting ready to board a plane headed for paradise, it’s always a good idea to beef up your home security before leaving for an extended period. Investing in a comprehensive home insurance policy is a great place to start when protecting your home. But savvy thieves are on the lookout for physical clues that your home will be an easy target. So, what can you do to deter burglars and keep your home safe? Keep reading to learn more about how thieves target homes and what you can do to protect your property while you’re away this summer.
Keeping Your Home Safe: Inside the Mind of a Burglar
A recent survey of 86 convicted burglars serving time in the Oregon Department of Corrections offered homeowners some much-needed insight into how thieves target homes and what they look for once they make their way inside. Some of the key takeaways from the survey include:
1. Most Burglars Get Inside Easily
When asked how they broke into homes, most burglars said that they gained access through an unlocked door or window. While others kicked the door in, most were able to safely access the home without causing any alarm within the neighborhood.
2. They Know Where to Look for Valuables
Most burglars head straight for the master bedroom when looking for valuables to loot. They know that most homeowners keep money, jewelry, small electronics, and weapons in the master bedroom. They look under mattresses, in closets, and in dresser drawers for items that can be easily carried and sold quickly.
3. Burglars Prefer to Work During the Day
While most people have been taught to believe that thieves like to work at night, under the cloak of darkness—the opposite is true. Most burglars target homes between the hours of 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. This is when most people in your neighborhood are away at work or school, leaving the street relatively empty and their activity seemingly less suspicious.
4. Home Security is a Major Deterrent
One of the best ways to get a burglar to shift their focus from your home is to install a home security system with cameras. They can easily spot the cameras when scoping out your neighborhood and will quickly remove your home from their list of targets if they suspect that you have adequate home security in place. In fact, 60% of burglars said that the presence of a home security system made them move on to neighboring homes.
5. Lights and Sounds Also Turn Burglars Away
If a brand-new home security system isn’t in your budget this summer, you may want to consider using an automatic timer to turn on lights and even TVs or a radio while you’re away. If thieves notice that your lights are coming on each night, and they hear sounds from inside the home as they survey the area, they’re more likely to leave your home off their target list.
